While he’s finished on the podium every year since, Liqui Moly Beta’s Zane Roberts hadn’t enjoyed a win at any series visit since 2021. Thus, he felt more motivated than usual to win the Lassen Motorcycle Club’s Golden Egg Hare Scramble, round three of the AMA West Hare Scrambles (WHS) Regional Championship Series, Presented by FMF, April 19-20.

And after chasing series points leader Mateo Oliveira around for the first lap of the mostly fast, flowy 18-mile loop, he zipped past and led the rest of the two-and-a-half-hour race, finishing over three minutes in front of Pro 250 riders Cole Zeller and Ryder Thomaselli.
“The first lap around, it was really dusty, so I kind of had to see the course [for] a lap before I would be comfortable trying to make any passes in the dust,” the FMF/Bridgestone/Klim-backed 480 RR rider said. “Just maybe two or three miles into that second lap, I was able to get around him going down a hill and figured I should probably put a little gap on him and kind of fall into a pace after that.”

FMF KTM Factory Off-road Racing Team’s Oliveira, however, was compromised by a broken hand, suffered in a simple crash while practicing during the week. Though he won round two with a broken clutch hand, this time it was a broken throttle hand that would be surgically attended to the day after the Golden Egg.
“The only motivation to race today was to try to salvage some points,” he said. “I’m a little bit bummed because my first two laps went super-well. I don’t know what happened after that. Obviously, my hand’s broken, but for it to go away that fast was a surprise.”
Still, finishing third in Open Pro and 14th overall exceeded his goal by one position and kept the Red Bull/Motorex/Alpinestars 450 XC-F rider top in overall AA points by a single digit over Thomaselli, 62-61.

Though the Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area is primarily faster-paced high desert trails, 250s seemed to excel at this race, with seven of the top 10 overall spots taken by Pro 250s who’d started on the second row.
Fastest among them was a very happy Zeller on his Gainslinger Human Performance/Precision Concepts/O’Neal Racing Husqvarna FX 250 in his first visit to Fort Sage. Despite the gap to the Open Pros on row one, he quickly moved up to second overall by the end of the first lap and held that spot for the last hour, though Roberts was too far ahead to catch.
“It kind of felt like the farm in some ways, like the trails by my house,” he said. “I just gelled with it. The first lap was a little hectic. I had clear track for a little bit [after getting the holeshot over FMF RPM Racing KTM’s Jaden Dahners] and as soon as I got in the dust [from the Open Pros], I was like, ‘Oh man! I hope I can still keep a good pace.’ I made a pass on one of the 450cc Pro guys, and then I had clear track for the next two laps, so I was able to put in some good laps and get some time on Thomaselli and kind of rode it in from there.”

Having won Pro 250 at round two and given that Fort Sage is very much like where he normally practices, Thomaselli and his 395 Motorsports/MX Trophies/Fly Racing FX 250 were gunning for the win but had to settle for second in class and an impressive third overall, a minute and two seconds behind Zeller.
After suffering a concussion at the beginning of the year in the opening Hare & Hound, Colton Aeck had struggled to regain his early-season form, but it seemed to finally return at the Golden Egg as he finished third in Pro 250 and fourth overall aboard his Hatch Racing/McCarthy Electric/O’Neal Racing KX250. However, defending class champ Layton Smail was a few seconds behind the entire way, unable to break through the dust on his Canyon Excavation/Let’s Ride/FXR KX250.
GasGas-supported Lane Lorenzo led the 250cc A class from start to finish on his 707 Suspension/Excel/Seven EX 250F to end up sixth overall (matching his round-two finish) ahead of Dahners, Race Tech KTM-mounted Ethan Pacak (third Pro/AA and Roberts’ roommate), FMF/RPM Racing KTM’s JJ Concannon (second in 250cc A) and KX450X-mounted Vet A winner Cody James.

FMF RPM Racing KTM’s Rachel Stout cleaned up the Dal Soggio/Mousse Balls/Moose Racing 350 XC-F she’d ridden to win the previous weekend’s Hare & Hound National and dominated the morning’s race for her second Pro Women win of the season.
“I felt like [last week’s win] really gave me a confidence boost, especially where it’s kind of like the same-ish terrain,” she shared. “I felt quite comfortable in it and felt like I just came from that, so it definitely helped a lot.”
Reigning Pro Women-class champ Ava Silvestri held second until a huge crash took her out. That opened the door for Woolslayer Racing Yamaha YZ250FX-mounted Ty Woolslayer to run to second in both the race and series points. Manic Moto Beta’s Catalina Springstroh continued her climb up the ladder for her first podium in her first year as a Pro.
